Compost Workshop at the Center…time to make beautiful soil

compost workshop
The Composting workshop took place last Saturday at the Atlanta Shambhala Center. Folks who attended were excited to see sustainable practices happening at the center, in addition to contemplative practice. This new composting plan for the ASC is also exciting because it is one important part of the center’s Permaculture plan.

Brandy Hall worked with participants to build a compost system out of recycled pallets. Now that it is started, the composting project will be ongoing. See below for a couple of tips from Brandy so that everyone can help grow some beautiful compost at the center:

We would love for people to be aware of a few things, and help make this composting project a success! The bins are located in the back right corner of the property near the tool shed. There are 2 compartments made of wood pallets, and a small wire bin next to the station containing brown cover material. The compartment on the right side is the active pile (labeled with a sign). To use, please follow these steps:

1. There is a covered bucket in the kitchen that says what can and can’t be put in the compost on the lid. Please, no animal products!

2. When the bucket is full or the Ikebana flowers are taken out, they can be added to the active pile and COVERED COMPLETELY with the brown cover material in the wire bin next to the station. There is also a pitch fork there for your use. PLEASE MAKE SURE NO SCRAPS ARE LEFT UNCOVERED. This will help us keep from attracting unwanted pests.

3. Community members are welcome to add their personal compost, but please remember: no animal products! and please cover everything you add with the brown cover material in the wire bin next to the station.

People have volunteered to check on the piles when visiting the Center, and turn them when needed. We will use the finished compost in the gardens. Thanks for contributing to our healthy soils!

Thanks!
